From admission to discharge – it is essential for nursing staff, OR teams, surgeons, and anesthesiologists to be aware of the current status and their responsibilities within the workflow. Following WHO and other guidelines, many hospitals already require checks at various steps in the surgical process, as summarized in the “surgical safety checklist”. This process, however, usually occurs outside of the EMR on paper or on a whiteboard, limiting its usability for quality improvement initiatives.
